How to estimate cement for a house

5 Oct 2026

Cement is used in foundations, columns, slabs, mortar and plaster. Estimating it early helps you plan purchases and avoid running out mid-pour.

Work out each element separately

  • Concrete: find the volume in cubic feet or cubic metres, then apply the mix ratio (for example 1:2:4).
  • Mortar for brickwork: depends on wall area, wall thickness and the mortar ratio.
  • Plaster: depends on the plastered area and thickness.

Add wastage

Some material is always lost to spillage, uneven surfaces and cutting. A wastage allowance of a few percent is normal. Ask your contractor what they assume.

Convert to bags

Cement is sold in bags. Round up to whole bags and keep a small reserve for finishing work.

Use the calculators

The Cement Calculator and Concrete Calculator on this site do these steps for you. Treat the results as estimates and confirm with your engineer before ordering.
